What is Puppy Culture?
Our sweet Nora, spent her first 8 weeks at Valley Vineyard Labradoodles where Mary uses the Puppy Culture program to give all her pups the very best start in life. Once we looked more into this program, we could see how Nora thrived with this beginning, and we wanted the puppies in our program to have this excellent start.
The tenants of the Puppy Culture program maintain that puppies raised in an enriched environment have changes in their brain that bring physiological changes. Including:
- Giving them the improved ability to learn and remember
- More emotional stability
- Better resiliency to stress
An optimal enriched environment has three key components
- A stimulating living area
- Exercise
- Problem solving and learning opportunities
There is no specific study that addresses this, but we've seen with Nora how the distinct effects of stimulating environment, exercise, and learning fit together like interlocking fingers to leverage each other’s delivery on the Enrichment Effect.
Temperament and Personality Testing
When the puppies are 7 weeks old, we will conduct individual temperament testing on the pups to learn more about their personalities. Energy levels may vary as your pup grows, and individual personality traits that start to show at this age will be impacted by their home environment after you pick them up. When conducting our temperament testing, we are studying the following areas:
- Sound Sensitivity - Measuring sensitivity to loud noises
- Sight Sensitivity - Measuring their response to new objects that may appear "scary"
- Touch Sensitivity - Measuring their sensitivity to unexpected touch
- Social Attraction - Measuring their social attraction to people and confidence levels, this one of the key indicators for easy or difficult training
- Social Dominance - Measuring acceptance of social dominance by another person
- Elevation - measuring acceptance of being in a position with no control, situations like being at the vet
- Following - Measuring their willingness to follow a person, this is another indicator to identify what kind of training is best for your pup
- Retrieving - Measuring their willingness to do something for you, this is another indicator for determining the best way to train your pup
- Stability - Measuring their startle responses to a strange object
- Restraint - Measuring their dominant or submissive tendency, this shows their level of ease when handling difficult situations
Our Commitment to You
As breeders we understand the care and attention needed to raise our puppies the right way so that our puppies have the greatest opportunity to be as physically healthy and mentally stable as possible.
Our puppies are raised in our home experiencing all the variety of activity and sound that life offers. They grow up listening to children playing, doorbells, music, lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, and delivery drivers. We are careful to properly introduce them to stimuli that is often frightening like fireworks, thunderstorms, large trucks and motorcycles. This foundation encourages well balanced, curious puppies that are far more confident and content than puppies raised in kennels.
Because we believe in breeding with the soundness of the Australian Labradoodle breed in mind, we will only breed animals that are in good health and who are physically and temperamentally sound. We are committed to giving our puppies a foundation starting with physically and mentally healthy parents, excellent socialization, outstanding health care and a place with a family that is prepared for the responsibility.
On-going communication with our puppy families, is something we look forward to. We have bonded with our puppies and want you to reach out to us as a resource for knowledge, as well as customer service and some wonderful new friendships.
